2015 Mazda Mazda3
Mazda has announced plans to recall nearly 14,500 Mazda3 compact cars from the 2015 and 2016 model years. The automaker has also instructed dealers to stop selling and delivering the vehicles.
The recall stems from a problem with the Mazda3’s fuel shut-off valve, which might permit fuel to flow into the charcoal emissions canister. If enough fuel enters the canister, it can result in a leak, boosting the possibility of a fire or an engine stall. Mazda says that owners may be alerted to the problem by a check-engine light.
The recall, stop-sale, and stop-delivery order affects 2015 and 2016 Mazda3 vehicles built between May 21, 2015 and August 24, 2015. Mazda says that 14,270 vehicles in the U.S. are affected, as are 136 in Puerto Rico. To date, Mazda says that no accidents or injuries have been associated with the problem.
Mazda says that it’s mailing recall notices to owners “in early October” (i.e. any minute now). After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to Mazda dealers, who will inspect the fuel tank.
If the defect doesn’t exist, customers will be able to drive away as soon as the inspection is complete. If, on the other hand, the fuel valve is defective, the dealer will replace the fuel tank and charcoal canister at no charge. Since that repair may take a while, Mazda says that owners will be given a loaner vehicle at no charge, until their Mazda3 is fixed.
