Following its initial debut back in November of last year, the Mazda Global MX-5 Cup Car makes its track-duty debut at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, where it will be used as a pace car for various motorsports events on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. According to Mazda, showcasing the Global Cup car at Laguna Seca allows Mazda to demonstrate the Cup Car’s durability and resilience on the mainstage in front of one of the most affluent race crowds in the nation.

The Cup car is the track-only, race-bred variant of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, set to compete in the one-make Cup Miata series. The Global MX-5 Cup cars are purchased directly from Mazda, allowing those who are competing in the series to race on a level playing field. No official details on the performance and modifications carried by the MX-5 Cup, but expect a bevy of aerodynamic, braking, and structural additions made to the little roadster in the name of rigidity and safety.

Under the hood, an unspecified 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder engine beats away, pushing out more than enough power to scuttle the lightweight roadster around the track. The 2016 MX-5 Cup series will compete through a season, culminating in the Global Shootout at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where an overall victor will be crowned, and will receive a one-day test in Mazda’s TUDOR USCC Skyactiv diesel race car.
