The popular compact crossover SUV has been freshened up, and Mazda is saying it’s an all-new version of the sharp-looking fun-driving model.
First launched for the 2013 model year, the CX-5 represented the first expression of Mazda combining its fuel-efficient Skyactiv design principles with its KODO design language. It’s a combination that resulted in an affordable crossover that managed to stand out both in terms of the way it looked and how it drove.
The redesigned CX-5 is due in showrooms next spring, as a 2017 model. It makes its formal debut on Wednesday at the 2016 Los Angeles auto show.
Mazda is short on details but has confirmed there will be three powertrain choices. Launching initially in Japan before rolling out globally, buyers in most markets will be able to choose from two gasoline units and one diesel. The gasoline engines include the 2.0- and 2.5-liter inline-4s found in the current CX-5, most likely still rated at 155 and 184 horsepower, respectively.

A 2.2-liter diesel engine will also be offered and has been confirmed for the United States in the second half of 2017. No numbers have been confirmed but in other markets this engine delivers 173 horsepower and a mightily impressive 310 pound-feet of torque.
Mazda has injected even more KODO lines into the redesigned CX-5 without going overboard on the car. It’s a styling trend that seems to have kicked into high gear with the arrival of the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata and the latest CX-9, and has now moved throughout the rest of the lineup.
The automaker is also bringing a new paint color to market along with the redesigned CX-5. It’s called Soul Red Crystal and it represents an evolution in the paint techniques that Mazda has been perfecting. If you look at a vehicle finished with either the standard Soul Red or the Machine Gray, you’ll see a high-quality finish thanks to the “Takuminuri” paint technology employed. Now this new version of Soul Red adds aluminum flakes and an additional translucent layer to help provide a very deep and saturated red color.
We look forward to learning more about the redesigned CX-5 following its debut in L.A. It’s important for it to be a hit with the crowd. After all, the vehicle is responsible for a full one quarter of Mazda’s sales.
