Set to become one of the most attractive crossovers on the market, the model has a stylish KODO design with a “proud” front fascia that features a large grille and standard LED headlights. Moving further back, we can see gently flowing surfaces, rounded fenders, and a dynamic beltline. Other highlights include a tailgate-mounted spoiler, a dual exhaust system, and 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels.
The 2017 CX-9 is a slightly shorter than its predecessor but the wheelbase has been stretched 2.2 inches (55mm). This change creates a more accommodating cabin with additional rear seat legroom as well as improved entry and egress.
The three-row interior boasts higher-quality materials and a large piece of aluminum trim on the dashboard. The crossover also has redesigned front seats, LED accent lighting and a seven- or eight-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system. The cabin is also significantly quieter than its predecessor as Mazda used thicker windows and 53 lbs (24 kg) of sounding deadening mats.
Options include a 12-speaker Bose audio system, Auburn-colored Nappa leather upholstery, and authentic Japanese rosewood trim sourced from a guitar manufacturer. Customers will also be able to order a high-tech instrument cluster with a 4.6-inch TFT display mounted between the gauges.
Power is provided by a new turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 227 bhp (169kW) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to a front or all-wheel drive system.
Mazda expect to sell approximately 50,000 units annually and North American sales will kick off in the spring of 2016.
