If it weren’t for the actual legendary status of the MX-5 Miata roadster we would have never allowed Mazda to escape unscathed using “Icon” as a nameplate for a model.

But, since we’re dealing with the roadster that actually made roadsters fashionable again we’re willing to let this slip – this time, so Mazda don’t make that a habit because we’re going to be ruthless if you’re coming up with a special MX-5 Legend in a few years. At this year’s edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Mazda will honor the millions of fans worldwide by setting loose the Miata Icon special edition. Buyers can look forward to the Icon in Meteor Grey Mica or Crystal White Pearlescent, with the convertible also touched by the Soul Red Metallic parts for the mirrors, rear spoiler, and front splitter. The latter color is also used for a decal running the sides, even though the pictured models somehow manage to eschew it. There’s also a set of 16-inch gunmetal wheels to wrap up the exterior design tweaks.

Moving inside to witness the cockpit, the Icon brings black leather seats and owners will also enjoy numerous amenities, among them included rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic headlights. Under the hood sits the 1.5-liter four-cylinder with just 129 horsepower – but we all know the MX-5 has never been about Hulking power levels. Mazda has announced the Icon will only spawn 600 units, all of them exclusive to the United Kingdom. There’s a good deal to be had though, as pricing starts at 20,995 pounds ($29,800) when it reaches dealerships on August 1. Bear in mind, the starting point is the SE-L Nav trim, which goes for 20,195 pounds ($28,700).
