Miata-shared chassis gets more power than 500 Abarth

The hotter version of the Fiat 124 Spider premiered in Geneva today, boasting the same 1.4-liter turbocharged chainsaw engine found in the Fiat 500 Abarth, but in this app, it’s rated at 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

The Abarth 124 also features a mechanical limited-slip differential along with 50/50 weight balance. It weighs in at just 2,337 pounds, says Fiat, and comes with either a six-speed manual or the Sequenziale Sportivo automatic ‘box with paddle shifters. A sport mode will dial things up a bit more.

The Abarth 124 Spider has a double-wishbone suspension in front with a five-link setup in the rear. Fiat says it’s tuned for “greater braking and cornering stability.” Bilstein dampers undoubtedly help, and Brembo stepped up with the brakes.

Fiat notes that the Spider gets a full traction control system, obviously, but one that can be turned off completely for true tail-out track days. A special exhaust is standard, as is an anti-glare kit and Alcantara accents. Those upgrades are installed at Officine Abarth in Italy, where the scorpion brand makes its home.

Outside, the Abarth gets a larger air intake and rear spoiler to direct airflow, 17-inch alloy wheels, hood humps (a direct reference to the original Spider) and LED lights. Five colors will be offered: white, red, metallic blue, gray and black.

A 7-inch infotainment system, satellite navigation, digital tuner, two USB ports, auxiliary input, Bluetooth and a backup camera are optional.

Fiat Abarth 124 Rally

Alongside the everyday Abarth Spider, Fiat also introduced the Abarth 124 Rally, a 300-hp monster ready to tackle special stages around the world. The Abarth 124 Rally gets all the other important racing bits too: a six-speed sequential gearbox, mechanical limited slip, a hardtop, structural enhancements and a roll cage.

As of the unveiling, Abarth has opened up the pre-booking phase for the rally car, so call your FIA affiliate and get ready to go racing.
