Is This The Only Way For Affordable RWD Sports Car To Survive?

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Actually, it would make sense. A new Porsche Boxster will cost you at least $50,000, or you could go and buy a new Mazda MX-5 Miata for about half that amount and still not miss out on any of the driving fun. Prefer a coupe? Then go for the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ for about the same price. Along with the upcoming Fiat 124 (a reskinned MX-5), these are the last and only affordable pure (not pony car) sports cars on sale today because they aren’t profitable for automakers. Mazda does well enough with MX-5 sales, but the GT86/FR-S/BRZ have experienced faltering sales lately.

Because of that, according to a new rumor coming from Motoring.com.au, parent company Toyota wants to save money if a second generation coupe were to happen. A Toyota insider is claiming that the MX-5’s chassis could be used as a basis for the second gen models. Essentially, it’d be a platform consolidation to allow for survival. Another reason why Toyota is considering this is because the new Supra is coming and it doesn’t want to create internal competition; making the GT86 triplets a bit smaller on a new platform that’s already proven makes financial sense. Will this happen for sure? Who knows, but that same insider stated that “If Toyota was to employ the MX-5’s chassis, it’d be on the next generation 86.”
