The Japanese automaker has unveiled the next generation of the medium CX-9 seven-seat sport utility vehicle during the world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Clad in the house’s latest interpretation of the Kodo “Soul of motion” design language, the CX-9 looks ready to be one of the more fashionable crossovers on the US market, with a rakish styling and a massive front end that highlights the radiator grille and the standard LED headlights. The bumper features a very clear, yet interesting design and flowing surfaces can be found all around the sides. The rear got treated to tailgate-mounted spoiler and a dual exhaust system, while the looks are completed by the available designs for the 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels. While it doesn’t show it, the 2017 CX-9 is actually smaller than its predecessor – save for the wheelbase which has gained 2.2 inches (55mm). This allows for the creation of a larger cabin and mainly the benefits will be seen in terms of rear seat legroom as well as the more facile entry and egress.

The cabin, featuring a three-row layout, comes with upgraded, higher-quality materials and an aluminum trim on the dashboard, as well as updated front seats, LED ambient lighting and a choice of seven- or eight-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment systems. Mazda also highlighted interior quietness improvements, adding it employed thicker windows and 53 lbs (24 kg) of sounding deadening material. That would bode well with the 12-speaker Bose audio system, Auburn-colored Nappa leather upholstery, and authentic Japanese rosewood trim that comes courtesy of a guitar manufacturer. Among technical goodies we can also mention the instrument cluster with a 4.6-inch TFT display.

Mazda has said it expects deliveries to reach around 50,000 units per year once dealerships have the CX-9 starting spring next year and power comes courtesy an all new turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant that delivers 227 bhp (169kW) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the CX-9 can be had in front or all-wheel drive configurations.
