Mad Mike Whiddett Shakes Down His New RADBUL Drift Car

Mad Mike 3

There are two schools of opinion concerning drifting. There are those, like ourselves, who believe it takes supreme skill, precise footwork, and epic levels of lunacy to pitch a car backwards into a corner at ludicrous levels of speed. We believe the drivers of these 1,000-plus-horsepower psychopaths are among the most capable drivers on the planet.

Then there’s the other, older school of thought that just watches the highlight reels and thinks drifting is just a giant party, more about the destruction of tires for everyone’s amusement. And honestly, both are partly true, but if you pay attention to the real drivers enough, you’ll develop a true appreciation for the skill and commitment these drivers have. For instance.

The video above is from Mad Mike Whiddett, who is one of the best hot shoe drift drivers out there, and highlights that skill and his new RADBUL Mazda MX-5 competition drift car. The RADBUL has been in development for the past year, and is powered by a twin-turbocharged four-rotor Mazda engine up front. The engine is just 2.6-liters, yet produces a staggering 1,000 horsepower and a sound that needs to be heard by all.

Besides the ridiculous engine, the RADBUL is loosely based off an NC Mazda MX-5, but has gone through extensive modifications to be up to the challenge of keeping all 1,000 raging horses in check as Whiddett slides the cars throughout the course. The video is of Whiddet’s shakedown of the car at the Highlands Motorsport Park, which is New Zealand’s premier motorsport circuit.

After watching this video, it’s easy to see that drifting is more about precision and skill thank drinking and partying like there’s no tomorrow. Also, why isn’t this a Mazda factory option?
