Next-generation Skyactiv-powered CX-9 shows Mazda‘s teasing prowess

Mazda’s next-generation CX-9 three-row crossover will debut at this month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, fleshing out the last of its lineup with the brand’s Skyactiv technologies.

The redesigned CX-9 moves to the Skyactiv powertrain and chassis as part of its first full overhaul since its 2007 introduction. The midsize crossover also gets a makeover to incorporate Mazda’s curvy Kodo design language.

Mazda Motor Corp. today confirmed plans for the Los Angeles debut in a press release. It called the CX-9 a “high-end model” that “moves toward a more premium design execution.”

A teaser image of the CX-9 shows it borrowing heavily from the design of the current Mazda6, which won design awards when it was introduced in 2013. The Mazda6 has a long front overhang and hood, implying a powerful engine, and a cab-rearward design.

The CX-9’s looks stand out from the boxy, functional packaging of such rivals as the Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder.

The rendering shows the CX-9 getting a stretched, curving hood and sloped, fastback roofline, accentuated by rounded fenders. Up front, the CX-9 bears the brand’s signature shield grille.
