Mazda Miata to get retractable hard top in NY?
British media outlets are reporting that Mazda will introduce a slightly more upscale variant of the MX-5 Miata equipped with a power-retractable hard top at the New York Auto Show.
A Mazda spokesperson told British magazine Autocar that the hard top will be lighter than the one that was fitted to the last-gen Miata, and much more compact in a bid to free up extra cargo capacity. The top will nonetheless add a few pounds to the roadster, but it’s expected to be a popular option among enthusiasts who live in colder regions.
It’s safe to assume Mazda won’t make any major mechanical modifications to the Miata hardtop. That means the roadster will be powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque. Buyers will be able to choose between a standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed automatic unit.
Mazda hasn’t commented on the report, though the company has confirmed it will unveil something new in the Big Apple. Stay tuned, the New York show opens its doors to the press on March 23rd, and we’ll be on location to bring you live images of Mazda’s big debut.
