Mazda has announced standard US pricing for the MX-5 Miata RF, following an exclusive invite-only program for the Launch Edition limited-production configuration.
The retractable fastback starts at $32,390 (including $835 freight) with a six-speed manual gearbox, while an automatic transmission can be added for another $700. The figures represent a premium of more than $6,500 over the entry-level soft-top edition, which entered its fourth generation for the 2016 model year.
The RF eschews a traditional accessory hardshell in favor of a unique body styling dedicated to the purpose. The folding targa-style top brings a weight penalty, but steps closer to a coupe.
Aside from the foldable top, the 2017 RF is distinguished by a 4.6-inch color TFT gauge and Machine Gray Metallic paint in place of Meteor Gray Mica. Like the soft-top convertible, the fastback package is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque.
Miata loyalists apparently failed to purchase the full run of 1,000 Launch Edition cars, leaving the remaining units available to the general public. The package features an exclusive combination of Machine Gray Metallic paint with a black roof panel and Auburn Nappa interior leather.
All trim levels of the 2017 MX-5 RF are scheduled to arrive at US dealers early next year. Production has already kicked off at Mazda’s Ujina Plant No.1, not far from its Hiroshima headquarters.
