Mazda recalls four models to fix lift supports
Mazda has issued a recall for four models to replace the rear hatch/liftgate supports.
The gas dampers used in the 2010-2013 Mazda3, 2012-2015 Mazda5, 2013-2016 CX-5 and 2016 CX-3 may have been produced with insufficient protective coating on the cylinder ends. The unprotected components are prone to corrosion, accelerated by water ingress and road salt.
“Over time, increased corrosion may eventually cause it to break as the rear hatch or lift gate is opened,” the automaker said in a statement. “The rear hatch or lift gate may drop suddenly, and/or the broken parts may hit the customer, causing injury.”
Mazda claims to be unaware of any accidents or injuries associated with the condition, which affects more than a half million vehicles sold in the US market.
The company has not yet outlined a notification or repair schedule.
