Mazda sells out of MX-5 RF Launch Edition

Mazda announced on Wednesday that it has completely sold out its limited run of MX-5 RF Launch Edition models.

Mazda says that all 1,000 units of the limited edition MX-5 RF Launch Edition have been spoken for. Ordered books were officially opened on September 26, and Mazda says half of that allocation was scooped up during the first week of ordering. Deliveries are scheduled to begin early next year.

The Launch Edition is intended to commemorate Mazda’s latest Retractable Fastback MX-5 Miata, which uses (as its name implies) a retractable hardtop in place of the car’s normal soft top. The MX-5 RF was introduced earlier this year at the New York auto show.

The limited edition model receives some unique kit, including Machine Gray Metallic exterior paint and Auburn Nappa leather seating. Buyers will also receive a serialized Tourneau 42mm MX-5 RF Launch Edition watch.

“The 2017 MX-5 RF Launch Edition preorder program was created to reward loyal Mazda customers with exclusive access to some of the first MX-5 RF models to be sold in the U.S., as well as to ramp up anticipation for what was arguably the star of the 2016 New York International Auto Show,” said Robert Davis, senior VP, U.S. Operations. “By every measure, this program was a success, and we’re excited to be that much closer to getting these cars into the garages of customers from all over the U.S.”

Although all versions of the Launch Edition are spoken for, the MX-5 RF can still be ordered in Club and Grand Touring trims. Prices for the MX-5 RF start at $31,555, which doesn’t included an $835 destination fee.
