The 2015 model year will officially be the last for the Mazda5, with the company announcing that no replacement is planned for this six-seat minivan that’s been sold in the U.S. since 2005. This cancellation doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, as the Mazda5 has essentially been in a class of one for the past few years. Based on a Mazda compact-car platform, the current Mazda5 is significantly smaller than mainstream minivans like the Honda Odyssey, and hasn’t had a true competitor since the Kia Rondo left our market in 2010. The only other compact van that offers more than five seats is the Ford Transit Connect, which added a long-wheelbase, seven-seat version with its recent redesign.

Though the Mazda5 was never a huge seller for Mazda (peaking at 22,021 sales in 2008), the recent market trend towards SUVs and crossovers means that sales have slumped even more lately. Mazda sold only 11,613 units of the 5 in 2014, far short of the CX-5 crossover’s 99,122 sales last year. As such, Mazda will focus on introducing new crossover models rather than a new version of this small van. In addition to the current CX-3 and CX-5 models, Mazda looks to be planning another crossover for its lineup as indicated by the upcoming Koeru concept headed to the Frankfurt auto show. The Mazda5 starts at $22,060 for the base Sport model, and runs up to $25,590 for the top-trim Grand Touring model.
