Mazda6 faces recall over airbag failures

Mazda has launched a recall program for approximately 42,000 Mazda6 sedans from the 2009-2010 model years.

The vehicles’ airbag control module may have been manufactured without a proper protective coating on the power-supply integrated circuit, allowing moisture to seep into the component. Corrosion and swelling will eventually cause failure.

“If the Sophisticated Airbag System unit is not replaced, the air bags may not deploy in a crash, which could increase the risk of injury,” the company warns. “Pursuant to NHTSA’s direction, Mazda has decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall though the air bag warning light illumination is in full compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”

Service technicians will replace the airbag control unit with a revised component. Limited parts supplies are currently available, but Mazda expects to begin issuing interim notification letters early next month.
