NY: Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth
Fiat has previewed the Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth ahead of its formal debut this week at the New York International Auto Show.
The company first unveiled the Mazda-based Fiat 124 Spider late last year in Los Angeles, followed by a more powerful Abarth 124 Spider edition introduced earlier this month in Geneva. The latest Elaborazione Abarth package appears to visually match the Euro-spec Abarth 124 Spider, however it does not carry over the improved engine tune.
“While all Fiat 124 Spider models deliver responsive handling and excellent power-to-weight ratio in a robust rear-wheel-drive package, the Elaborazione Abarth model builds on the Spider’s engaging driving dynamics to offer even more fun for performance enthusiasts,” the company notes.
The only “Elaborazione Abarth-exclusive” feature appears to be a unique Sport Mode setting with special calibration for the engine, automatic transmission, electric power steering and stability control system. The engine calibrations do not appear to affect output ratings, potentially explaining the ‘Abarth’ branding shift from the front of the name to the end.
All US-bound Fiat 124 Spiders integrate a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, tuned to deliver 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, the Abarth 124 Spider boasts an extra 10 ponies.
The Fiat 124 Spider is due to arrive at US showrooms sometime this summer. A launch date for the Elaborazione Abarth edition remains unclear.
