Poll: Fiat 500X or Mazda CX-3?

Compact crossovers are hot these days. It seems like every automaker is introducing one (or more) to cash in on the craze.

Italian automaker Fiat birthed out a small utility in the form of its 500X. Likewise, its Japanese rival, Mazda, was in the family way as well, something that ultimately resulted in the CX-3.

Starting with the Fiat, which is built in southern Italy, it’s powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged MultiAir four-cylinder engine. It puts out a more-than-adequate 160 horses and 184 lb-ft of peak torque. A 2.4-liter naturally aspirated ‘banger is also offered. It puts out 180 ponies. Both engines are matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

In comparison, the Mazda CX-3 makes due with just one engine, a 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder. Predictably, it’s less muscular than either of the Fiat’s offerings. It delivers 146 horsepower and an equal measure of torque. Likewise, the CX-3’s transmission is less advanced than the 500X’s, giving up three ratios to its competitor. But in spite of these deficiencies the Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom” heritage could still give it a edge when it comes to driving enjoyment.
