The MX-5 RF’s Has Been Priced: Why Buy A Porsche When There’s This?

After last week’s pre-orders opened, the pricing has been announced.

For those wanting a modern roadster with great handling, even better looks and a host of the right features, there’s no need to fork over Porsche money anymore thanks to some pretty competitive pricing. The base model MX-5 RF Club six-speed manual transmission starts at $31,555 while the very tasty MX-5 RF Launch Edition six-speed automatic transmission tops the list at only a few thousand more, coming in at $34,925. We expect to see a higher-spec model at some point. It could be a “Signature” edition, a trim level currently only available on the CX-9.

In terms of options you can spec a Brembo/BBS brake package for the MX-5 RF Club manual transmission for $3,400, which is oddly not available for the auto. Advanced keyless entry will set you back $130, but it’s standard on the AT and Launch Edition models. Metallic paint (Soul Red and Machine Gray) is $300. Those who registered for pre-orders will surely be happy with themselves. The MX-5 Miata RF is one really good looking car and the Launch Edition has to be the best of the lot. For those not in the know, the RF part of the name stands for “Retractable Fastback,” taken from the Miata’s new retractable hardtop and silky smooth fastback styling.

While the soft top is just as good (and probably better due to weight) dynamically, having a hard top gives the small car a much more expensive look and feel. Most of the features in the RF are the same as in the soft-top models, but a few changes were made just because it could be done. The RF features a 4.6-inch TFT gauge and the Meteor Gray Mica paint is replaced with this fantastic Machine Gray Metallic. The Launch Edition gets a little more special treatment in the form of a hand painted black roof and a premium Nappa leather interior that’s more at home in a luxury sports car. They will also feature unique door sill plates and a serialized, custom-designed 42 mm Tourneau MX-5 RF Launch Edition Watch.

There were 1,000 up for pre-order and Mazda says the ordering of the Launch Edition is now open to the general public as long as there are still some of the 1,000 cars left. The full range of the Miata RF models will start appearing on showroom floors in early 2017.
